Fresh Fish Sold Here Today . . . the story

Here's the story behind "Fresh Fish Sold Here Today" as best I remember it, hearing it about 65 years ago!

A man goes to an outdoor market buy food.
He sees a stand with a sign overhead" FRESH FISH SOLD HERE TODAY
He says to the vendor, "Your sign is too long. You don't need all those words."
"What do you mean," asks the vendor
"Take down the word "fresh;" people will know it's fresh at this outdoor market.
"Okay," says the vendor, and he takes down "FRESH"
"Now, about the word "TODAY," when else!"
The vendor takes down "TODAY"
The sign now says "FISH SOLD HERE"
"Here! Where else?
The vendor takes down "HERE," the sign says "FISH SOLD"
"Sold, do you think anyone thinks you are giving the fish away?"
The vendor takes down "SOLD" and the sign now says "FISH"
"Fish!" says the shopper. With a smell like this, you need a sign?"

You need to have or fake a Yiddish accent to tell this story right!

So, whenever I write, I remember this story, but fail to heed it's message.

Teach a woman to fish and . . .

This is an experiment in blogging. I picked a title based upon a story my Russian/Polish Jewish father, Albert Muldavin, told me, which I always think of when I start to edit some of my own material. More on that story in my next entry. For the moment I want to find out what I can, and cannot do on this blog.
